On 24-26 June 2009, the Fourth CIS Local Counsel Forum took place in Kiev at the Opera Hotel, which was traditionally attended by the partners of our firm. This year the Forum was hosted by RULG (Ukrainian Legal Group).

Despite the economic crisis which has affected the CIS region as much as the rest of the world, the Fourth Forum was held this year and was visited by numerous participants, because the Forum delegates believe that counsels are to withstand the crisis as a community and need each other now even more than in the pre-crisis times. The CIS Local Counsel Forum has always been a place where numerous referrals were exchanged and new projects generated, and the Fourth Forum was not an exception from this rule. The Forum delegates were leaving Kiev with new contacts, ideas, projects and alliances, same as after previous Forums.

The 2009 year's program was mainly devoted to one big idea - "Legal Services & Business" - that is how we as practicing lawyers can produce a positive impact on our clients' businesses, what business needs from us and what we can do to make ourselves more useful and productive for our clients.

The following particular issues were discussed at the Forum:
  • what law firms can do to help clients through difficult times;

  • lessons of the economic crisis (case studies of successful internal reforms and how they improve our services to clients);

  • how the crisis changed the relationship between corporate counsel and external counsel;

  • corporate restructuring and project finance (innovative ideas for the modern economic climate);

  • corporate compliance and criminal liability of a legal entity (new global trends), etc.

In May 2009 six lawyers from Aequitas law firm - Olga Chentsova, Violetta Kim, Tatyana Suleyeva, Natalya Braynina, Nurlan Sholanov and Yulia Chumachenko - have been selected by their peers for inclusion in the inaugural edition of the Best Lawyers list for Kazakhstan. Best Lawyers is regarded as the definitive guide to legal excellence in the U.S. and increasingly around the world.
