Ius Laboris: Trade union responses to COVID-19
Ius Laboris presented the new Trade union responses to COVID-19 survey of 23 member countries, which reveals a number of different approaches by unions across jurisdictions, with some taking many new initiatives and helping drive broader changes, whilst others struggled to do the sorts of activities they would do in normal times. In terms of those that have been more expansive in their aims than simply focusing on the COVID-basics, it hasn’t all been plain sailing, as governments haven’t always responded unequivocally.
The Kazakhstan part of the survey was prepared by AEQUITAS Partner and Head of Labor & Employment, Yuliya Chumachenko. This chapter covers the following key issues:
- What kind of union actions have taken place in your country as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic?
- Are the unions combining their COVID action with other issues, such as equal pay, women’s rights and the protection of minorities?
- How has the government reacted to what the unions are doing?
