On 26 and 27 May, Almaty witnessed several events for lawyers organized by KazBar in the framework of the annual Conference.
On 26 May, KazBar and Kazakhstan Bar Association organized a round table dedicated to a topic actual for all practicing lawyers of Kazakhstan – regulation of legal profession.
Representatives of the leading law firms, lawyers and NCE “Atameken” discussed a possibility to establish a unified self-regulated organization on the basis of the existing professional legal associations of Kazakhstan. The most active discussions were focused on the issues of regulation of a legal profession, admission to practice, attestation of practicing lawyers and quality of legal education in Kazakhstan.
On 27 May, KazBar, the Law Society of England and Wales and the British Chamber of Commerce in Kazakhstan jointly held the English Law Day Forum, the key topics of which encompassed circulation of securities, project finance and public private partnership, dispute resolution in international arbitration and establishment of Astana International Financial Center in the Kazakhstan capital. Partners of the leading law firms of Kazakhstan and Russia, UK and Hong-Kong partook in the discussion.
Valikhan Shaikenov, AEQUITAS Partner, spoke on the topical issues of the legal status of AIFC. Valikhan came forward the RK Law “On International Financial Center” mentioning significant contradiction between the Constitutional Law on AIFC and constitutional order in the RK. He also proposed certain legal ways out of the existing legal situation.
